Moose watchingis a popular activity in Pittsburg, NH. Spring through the fall the moose do feed on the vegetation and salt that has collected on the sides of the road in the wetland areas. Dawn and dusk are the best times for viewing.
*Best viewing areas: Route 3 North “Moose Alley”, East Inlet and areas of wetlands on route 3.
!!!!!!! Moose are very dangerous and unpredictable. Do not STOP in the road as the speed is around 55mph. Stay a safe distance away. They do blend in with their surroundings, drive safely.
Fishingis a very popular activity in Pittsburg. Whether it be fly fishing in the rivers or spin fishing there are many options and opportunities. PLEASE have your license and fish in appropriately designated areas.
Bird watching is another popular activity. Home to Bald Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Ruffed and Spruce Grouse, American Woodcock, Common Loon, Canada Goose, Cedar Waxwing, Belted Kingfishers and wild turkey to name a few. Areas of interest for this are Back Lake, Magalloway Mountain, Johnson Memorial Park, East Inlet and Scott Bog.
Hiking:
*Magalloway Mountain– 3360’ in elevation. Taken from the Abeniki word “Malecite” which means, “dwelling place of moose,” Magalloway is known for spectacular views from the fire tower. At the parking area there are 2 trials: “Coot” and “Bobcat”. “Coot” is the faster route while “Bobcat” is less strenuous. For an average hiker, these trails require 45-60 minutes to ascend. RECOMMEND DECENDING “BOBCAT” DUE TO “COOT” BEING A STEEP PITCH.
*Little Hellgate Falls– 30’ high waterfall with a pool below feeding the Dead Diamond River. Takes about 45 minutes to hike to. Take Magalloway Road 3.1 miles, turn right onto Buckhorn Road for 3.4 miles, stay right onto Cedar Steam for 2.2 miles and snowmobile marker 20W and 137E are across from the trail marker.
*Garfield Falls– 40’ high waterfall located on the East Branch of the Dead Diamond River.
*Fourth Connecticut Lake –½ mile hike for about 30 minutes and 400’ oin elevation; total elevation is about 2600’. The trailhead is North on Route 3 across from the U.S. Custom station. This is the beginning of the Connecticut river.
SNOWMOBILING AND ATV trail maps are available at most stores throughout Pittsburg and highly encouraged for traveling into the woods in Pittsburg, NH!
